O'Neill Eagle Boys Win O'Neill Invitational

Last week the O’Neill Eagles hosted their 56th Annual O’Neill Invitational Track Meet. The O’Neill Boy’s track team competed against some of the best schools in the area. The Eagles captured the title with 139 points. Second place went to Battle Creek with 119 points. The O’Neill Eagles were able to capture five event championship medals and medalled in sixteen of the seventeen events in the Division I category.

Highlight for the Eagles was Walker Liewer breaking the school record with a throw of 160 feet, 11 inches, which won the event. Walker also took 2nd in the shot put.

In the triple jump Justin Appleby won his first varsity event with a jump of 40 feet, 7 inches. In the long jump Alex Thramer placed 2nd with 19 feet 5.75 inches, Appleby placed 4th with 18 feet 10 inches, and Tyler Regan was 5th with 18 feet 7 inches. In high jump Thramer placed 4th and Regan 6th.

Corbin Dean won the vault with 11 feet 6 inches. Teammates Caden Moore placed 4th and Tanner Storjohann was 5th, both went 9 feet 6 inches.

In the sprints Dean placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash, 11.87 seconds, and Jon Gettert placed 6th in the 400 meter dash, 55.45 seconds. The distance came with a strong supporting cast with point earners. Placing in the 3200 meter with best times of the year were Grant Johnston 2nd and Blake Johnston 3rd, running 10 minutes, 19 seconds. In the 1600 meter run Blake placed 1st and Grant 3rd. Times were 4:49.60 and 4:53.04, respectively. In the 800 meter run Nathaniel 4th with 2:10.19 and Ehric Strope was 5th with 2:12.33.

In the 110 high hurdles Thramer placed 4th with 16.96, and Wyatt Liewer 5th with 17.66. In the 300 intermediate hurdles Thramer placed 4th with 42.75, and Wyatt Liewer with 45.24.

The relays were lead again by the 4 x 800 with a first place finish of 10 minutes, 40 seconds. Members were Grant Johnston, Nathaniel Jennings, Jon Gettert, and Blake Johnston. The 4 x 100 placed 4rd with a season best time of 47.79: sprinters were Estabon De Lao, Trevor Dempster, Blake Krysl, and Corbin Dean. The 4 x 400 ran a season best of 4:44.72 with Jon Gettert, Nathaniel Jennings, Tyler Regan, and Corbin Dean, it earned them 3rd place medals.

“We ran competed well. The O;Neill Boy’s Team haven’t won their own invite since 1990. Coaches really feel like there are places for lots of improvement. We are getting better every week. We see a few athletes that stumble, but come back and prove themselves. We are heading in the right direction,” said Coach Hilker.

This week the O’Neill Eagles will be competing at the 48th Annual West Holt Track Meet, April 21. Field events start at 2:00 pm and running events at 3:30 pm. Come support the Eagles.
