2017 NSAA State Wrestling Tournament Results

February 20, 2017

The Eagle Wrestling team closed out their season this past weekend finishing 4th at the Nebraska State High School Wrestling tournament.  O’Neill finished with 88 team points behind Valentine who broke the Class C scoring record with 195 pts. David City was second with 107.5 and Battle Creek was third with 90.5.  The Eagles brought home 4 medalists.  Cauy Shaw finished 4th at 152 lbs.  While Caden Moore finished in 3rd place at 145 lbs.  At 195 lbs. Bailey Thompson capped off his senior season winning his 2nd state championship, while teammate Jason Hahlbeck matched his success earning his second title at 220 lbs.  Elias Lorenzo, who qualified at 113 lbs. for the tournament did not place, but finished with a record of 1-2.

"I’ve been a part of a lot of state tournaments, 13 as a head coach.  The number of upsets at this one across the tournament was incredible.  For the most part we were able to avoid a lot of that.  Having those seniors go out on top and repeat the way they did, it was the only fitting ending in my mind.  They have meant so much to our program, our school, and community.  It has been a pleasure and an honor to be in their corner,”  commented Coach Corkle.  He went on to say, “It’s always a good feeling when every wrestler you bring is able to walk out of here with a win.  That obviously doesn’t happen every year and you can’t say enough about Cauy and Caden.  Cauy came into this tournament unranked and came out on top in some tight matches.  He and Caden worked so hard in the offseason to prepare for this moment and it made all the difference.  Caden obviously had his sights set a little higher then third and the loss Friday night for him hurt.  When things like that happen, you never know how someone is going to respond.  Caden had some tough matches on Saturday morning, "I’ve seen a lot of kids pack it in in similar situations, but that’s not Caden.  His match against Pearman for third… There wasn’t a better match in the tournament and the takedown he had to win it…that’s a championship takedown."
