March 29, 2017
The O’Neill Lady Eagle Track and Field team got their season underway on Tuesday, March 21st at the Dan Lennon Invitational at the University of South Dakota.
O’Neill had a great meet as many athletes came away with some fine performances and placers.
Mikayla Marvin began that season just as she ended it last year performing well in the pole vault. Marvin was the State runner-up in Class B last year with a school-record tying vault of 11-2. Mikayla won the event at USD with a vault of 10-0. Teammate Caleigh Miles finished in 7th with a vault of 7-0.
Tori Wendell had a good day in the jumps. Tori finished in 2nd place in the triple jump with a leap of 32-7.25 and 5th in the long jump going 14-6. Freshman Makenna Fowler had a nice first varsity meet making the finals of the long jump and finishing in 7th place with a jump of 13-10.25.
Aurora Gutshall had a good day in the high hurdles. Aurora made it to the finals and placed 8th. She had a great semi-final time of 10.11, but hit a hurdle in the finals taking her out of medal contention and placed 8th.
The girls Sprint Medley team of Makayla Hilker, Tori Wendell, Briaunna Parks and Payton Birkel placed 8th with a time of 4:45.59 putting them at the top of the all-time list for that event at OHS.
“Overall, I was really pleased with our first meet, despite the lack of outdoor practice time we have had because of the weather. We should have an exciting year if we can stay healthy.”
