April 24, 2017

The O'Neill golf team really started to get their season off and rolling last week with two big tournaments.  On Thursday the Eagles hosted their invite which saw 62 golfers compete on a cold and windy day.  The O'Neill golfers knew that there was going to have to play some good golf as there were going to be 4-5 really good teams at their own invite.  O'Neill stepped up to the challenge and after trailing West Holt by 6 strokes at the half way point the Eagles battled back and ended up winning the Team Tournament with a score of 330.  West Holt and Cedar Catholic tied for second shooting 330.  O'Neill was led by Josh Cuddy who shot a 76 that tied him for first.  Even though Josh lost the playoff is solid play gave the Eagles the start that they needed.  Jacob Todd also shot very well placing 3rd with a 77.  Cole Gaughenbaugh was off him game for most of the day, but battled on every stroke and ended up shooting an 88 and placing 12th.  Jared Peed was one stroke out of the medals shooting an 89.  Bryce Heiser shot a 99 to round out the scoring for the varsity.  JV team shot a 405 and placed 6th out of the 12 teams.  Leading the JV was River Kramer with a 93, Hunter Cullen shot a 98, Pete Blumenstock fired a 100.  Ayden Brown shot a 114 and Ephriam Bunner shot a 158.

The Eagles could celebrate to long as they were back in action at Indian Trails golf Course in Beemer Nebraska for the Mid-states golf tournament.  It was a gorgeous day for golf on a very pretty and difficult course.  O'Neill knew that Cedar was going to be their main competition and that is exactly how it played out.  Cedar Catholic shot a 345 and placed first with O'Neill 7 shot back at 352 getting second place as a team.  Josh Cuddy again led the Eagles shooting an 81 and placing 2nd.  Jacob Todd placed 10th shooting an 87.  Cole Gaughenbaugh fired an 90, while Bryce Heiser shot a 94.  Jared Peed rounded out the scoring with a 96.   Hunter Cullen played for the JV side and shot a 101 which was one of the best JV scores their on the day.

The Eagles will next be in action on Thursday as they travel to Hartington to battle against another quality field.
