Grady Welke

The O’Neill Eagles track and field teams faced a strong field of competition at the Grand Island Northwest Invitational, where 15 teams gathered for a competitive day on the track and in the field. The O’Neill boys team placed 7th overall, while the girls team finished 13th.

Leading the way for the Eagles boys was Ryker Sudbeck, who turned in an impressive performance in multiple events. Sudbeck placed 2nd in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.71 seconds and added a 3rd-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 11 inches. He also contributed to the 4x400-meter relay team that placed 8th in 3:39.22, teaming with Colten Shoemaker, Porter Heiss, and Nate Brown.

Ian Yates delivered a strong showing in the hurdles, earning 3rd place in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.35 seconds. In the field events, Grady Welke cleared 12 feet, 7 inches to place 7th in the pole vault, while Porter Mathews added points with a 4th-place finish in the long jump at 21 feet, 5.25 inches.

The 4x800-meter relay team also had a solid performance, finishing 4th with a time of 9:00.64. Team members included Paul Fonseca, Alonso Hernandez, Nate Brown, and Angel Sanchez.

On the girl’s side, the 4x400-meter relay team highlighted the day with a 6th-place finish in 4:16.77. The team consisted of Madelynn Heiss, Mollie Corkle, Blakely Sudbeck, and Kiarra Kennedy. The 4x800-meter relay squad also competed well, posting a time of 10:22.84 with Corkle, Reagan Kaufman, and Kennedy leading the effort.

Mariah Kallhoff stood out in the throwing events, placing 3rd in both the shot put and discus. She recorded a throw of 38 feet, 0 inches in the shot put and 119 feet, 10 inches in the discus. Blakely Sudbeck added a 3rd-place finish in the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 11 inches, while Serena Chavez placed 8th in the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet, 5 inches.

The Eagles will return to action next week with a busy schedule. O’Neill will compete at the Pierce Freshman/Sophomore Invitational on April 28, the Norfolk Classic on April 30, and the Mid-States Conference Track Meet hosted by Wayne on Saturday, May 2.
