O'Neill Junior-Senior High School Attempts to Break Marathon World Record (200 meters at a time!)

November 06, 2019

Over 40 O’Neill Jr. & Sr. High School students, as well as some coaches, gathered at the O’Neill High School Track on Monday, November 4th to somewhat experience what it takes to run a marathon in under 2 hours.

On October 12th of this year, Eliad Chipchoge (pronounced Kip-Cho-Gee) of Kenya ran in a marathon in Vienna, Austria.  He completed the 26-mile 385-yard marathon in 1 hour 59 minutes and 40 seconds (1:59:40).  Unfortunately, the amazing mark did not count as a world record because standard rules of pacing were not followed and it was not an open event.

Nonetheless, the time marks the first time ever that a person has run a marathon in under two hours.  He is also the current world record holder in the marathon with a time of 2 hours 1 minute and 39 seconds.

Monday O’Neill Students and Coaches ran a total of 105 laps plus 195 meters on the track and needed to average a little better than 34 seconds per 200 meters to break the mark.  They ran the distance in a 200-meter relay format.  Each runner that carried the baton ran 200 meters then handed off to another runner.

They started right around 4:10 pm and finished the 26 miles 385 yards in 1:52:21.

This event showed great school and team spirit but also demonstrated to those participating, the strenuous pace that one man kept up for 1:59:40 in that marathon.

A big thanks to all those that ran in this event and to all that came and cheered them on.

The video below is the final lap with Coach Kevin Morrow starting off the first 200 meters and the entire group finishing the last 200 meters.
