John Alden Voted Outstanding Wrestler at Mid-Dakota Monster

January 11, 2023

Courtesy of Bryan Corkle - It has been a wild last couple of days of wrestling.  The Norm Mandstedt girls tournament on Thursday, January 5th and the Mid-Dakota Monster on Friday and Saturday, January 6th and 7th. Tough, Tough, Tough! So many highlights.

Lots of first wins for our younger athletes.

Lots of learning opportunities that will lead to success down the road.

Maddy Kellum and Mollie Corkle medal in the JV division while Paola Vergara finished 3rd and Maddy Jakubowski was 2nd at the Norm.

For 13 years O'Neill High been going to Presho for the Monster…31 teams, 32 person brackets on the boys side. It’s pretty wild. OHS has had several champs at this tournament through the years and several eventual state champs who took a loss at this tournament. This weekend we ended with 5 medalists. Pryor Mathews finished 6th at 145, Sal Rodriguez was 7th at 195, Tucker Shabram and Brody Jakubowski were 4th and 6th respectively at HWT.

John Alden made history this weekend becoming the first O’Neill Eagle to be voted Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament! Canton, Pierre TF Riggs, Winner in the field…these are some of the best teams in the state. To be recognized in that field…That’s a big deal. John started as the 4 seed in the bracket, and remained undefeated. He beat 2 past South Dakota state champions in route to the title at 126 lbs. Dude was focused and super smooth all weekend.

On the girls side here at Presho, Cyrise Brown finished as a Runner-up and Mollie Corkle placed 4th. Paola Vergara placed 2nd and Maddy Jakubowski was 3rd.
