Teacher Spotlight📣
We are writing to congratulate and thank you for the incredible work that your teacher Emily Wlaschin has accomplished with the 2026 Nebraska Writing Project Summer Institute at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As facilitators of this intensive annual graduate seminar for teachers, we wanted to take this opportunity to share a brief note about Emily’s engagement and inspirational leadership.
Emily offered a research-based professional development workshop to our group of eighteen teachers entitled: Words That Hit: Teaching Slam Poetry. In this teaching demonstration and workshop, Emily showed how we can engage our students in creative writing exercises using the characteristics present in slam poetry. The presentation not only scaffolded opportunities for creative writing but also emphasized the importance of student voice. Resoundingly, people explained that after this activity, they would be excited to use the scaffolds that Emily modeled with something as complicated as encouraging reluctant writers to take personal writing public. One teacher participant stated, “The topic of slam poetry was immediately exciting to me. I think you gave really compelling testimonials from your own experience and compelling research for how this can engage students, especially maybe students who don't engage as much otherwise. I greatly respected how you began with your own slam poem. It was so beautiful and set a tone of vulnerability. And I also thought the prompts for the poems were so helpful.”
In the Nebraska Writing Project, we have been committed for almost 50 years to developing youth programs, graduate courses, teaching resources, and community events that center innovative and research-backed approaches to teaching writing. Please reach out if we can further support you or your teachers with professional development or youth programming or if you would like to know more about the Nebraska Writing Project.
Thank you for recruiting and supporting phenomenal teachers such as Emily Wlaschin. We are thrilled to learn with and from them, and we appreciate the positive impact they have on teachers and students.

This weeks' Middle School Minute is a shout out to all of you that are making it happen in and out of the classroom. You will also find in there, a reminder to those of you that are struggling to lock in to not take a small thing like being asked to refocus or stop a particular behavior and turn it into something bigger by trying to debate or gaslight your teacher. Really, truly they are trying to help you and everyone else in the classroom out by bringing it back to the learning.
